Meet Beth

Since May, I've been directing the English Speaking Center at Universidad Latina in Costa Rica. We have about 400 students and about 25 professors, and it's a dance to coordinate it all in this culture! We're in the midst of a "relaunching" of the program, which should include new facilities, new capital, etc. Great fun! I'm hoping to implement some sort of formal online instruction component in the coming year.

I am relatively new to the EFL field, as I began teaching about 7 years ago. My previous life in the US was in the field of traumatic brain injury, first as speech-language pathologist, and mostly as director for rehab programs. I've always loved languages and kind of came full circle to get into the field.

Well, I had some fun with the photos! The above photo is from my "past life" in Dexter, Michigan. I lived there 15 years ago. The photo is the Dexter Cider Mill, and in the cool, crisp autumn, you can go there to get fresh, unpasteurized apple cider and donuts. MMMMmmmm!

Fascinating background, Beth. Lots and lots of inmates where I work with suffer from traumatic brain injury either due to head injuries (acquired more often than not when they were children, accidental or intentional) or drug-related. (Pardon my ignorance but the field may not include drug-related injuries as part of the rubric.) Unfortunaetly, although my supervisors tout me as an 'expert' in this field, I'm far from it.

Are you full-time involved in this area in Costa Rica?
