Meet Mary

I physically may be in flux during the next few weeks. I am in the process of moving from Hualien, Taiwan back to the U.S. My body is now here in The States, but alas, most of my things are still adrift in the Pacific, Atlantic, or one of those big bodies of water out there! I am writing to you now from my sister's in Houston, Texas, U.S.A. (southwest region) but most of this week I will be in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvannia, U.S.A., my hometown (northeast region) for a job interview and to see a few friends and family. I'm currently job searching, so if I get invited to other interviews, I may be doing some more hopping around!

For the past four years, I was in Taiwan, that little island country south of China, working as an EFL teacher, writer, editor, and general all around consultant on American culture and the use of the English language. The first year, my full-time job was with a private language school, where I taught everyone from 6 year olds up to on-site corporate classes. Then, I moved on to a technical university. The third year, I moved from Tainan, a city on the more built-up western side of the country, to Hualien, in the more mountainous area on the eastern side. There I worked full-time at Tzu Chi University, a private Buddhist university, and taught a range of courses from general English skills to literature, business English and travel English. I decided it was time to go when my contract ended this year in July, as it was getting to be too socially isolating for me. So, I traveled around Taiwan saying goodbye to friends, stopped in Japan for a lengthy camping and hiking expedition in northern Honshu, and now here I am at my sister's place in Houston wondering where I'll end up next!
